Instructions for remotely logging into the SCU Design Center:

Telnet is the most commonly used protocol for remote logging and comes standard with most Operating Systems. But for security and usability reasons it is recommended that you use the Secure Shell Protocol (ssh). If this protocol client is not available with your operating system, then please download PuTTy, a free telnet/ssh client (putty.exe for Windows OS) from http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html. This is a precompiled executable and does not need installation; just double click on the executable to start using.

You can save the profile of every system that you log into. You will need to enter the following mandatory fields in order to setup a profile:

Host Name (or IP Address):

To access the Linux machines in SCU DC use the host name: linux.scudc.scu.edu

Or to access the Solaris machines use: sol.scudc.scu.edu

As you may have noticed, you do not have to remember the name/IP of a particular machine; the system does some load balancing and automatically logs you into one of the unused (or less loaded) machines.

Of course, if you like a particular machine then you can log into that machine too, for e.g., if you want to log into nova28, which is a Solaris machine, you would use the host name: nova28.dc.engr.scu.edu, or if you want to log into linux60502, which is a Linux machine, you would use the host name: linux60502.dc.engr.scu.edu

Protocol:

Choose ‘SSH’, the ‘Port’ field will get automatically set.

Saved Sessions:

Give a relevant name to this session like linux-scudc or solaris-scudc and click on Save. To start the session, click on Open. You will be asked to enter your usual username and password, which you use in any of the Solaris/Linux labs. Once this information is authenticated you will be logged into the system. To quit, type exit on the command line.

The next time when you need to login, just click on Load to use your previously created profile and click on Open to start the session.
