Majokko Megu-chan was probably the first modern-style magical girl show. The plots, characters, themes, would be recognizable to a modern fan. It was the first to make use of a wide variety of facial expressions and mannerisms, an increase in production value, and had a willingness to explore a wide variety of themes. A very popular title that was liked by more than just the target audience.

Megu-chan was a girl sent from the magic world to the real world to grow up. If she does a good job, she can become the next queen of the magic world. She's adopted by an ex-witch and has to learn about all the concepts her world doesn't have like love, family, friendship, kindness, etc. She also grows up and matures as the series goes on. So, the premise would fit perfectly in a modern magical girl show. The red-headed heroine is outgoing, mischievious, very pretty, and tempermental. A favorite icon of girls (and some boys) of that time.
