| Magical Emi was produced by Studio Pierrot following Magical Fairy Pelsia. Compared to Pelsia or Mami, it follows the same basic formula, and may seem a bit repetitive for fans who are familiar with the first two. The heroine, Mai, dreams of becoming a magician and meets a light fairy named Topo who posseses a stuffed squirrel. Using a wand given to her by Topo, she can transform into Magical Emi, a real magician who typically uses her powers to impress the stage audience. The main groundbreaking theme about this anime is the way it explores the question of what exactly is 'magic'. There is a subtle zen-type backstory that begins in episode 3, as well as a good deal of angst as Mai tries to comprehend how her powers should be used and what they mean in the scheme of things. |
